Torri del Benaco discovery guide
Why visit Torri del Benaco the smart way
For the limonaia, which is the clearest surviving explanation anywhere on the lake of how lemons were grown at a latitude that should kill them. It is still planted, and it is attached to the castle rather than hidden on private land.
For the petroglyphs — figures, weapons and symbols pecked into open rock in the Bronze Age or earlier, part of a wider group found along this shore, and startlingly older than the fortress below them.
And for a harbour that is still a working one. Torri is quieter than Malcesine or Sirmione and its residents value that; the town has not been fully converted into its own view.

May, June and September for pleasant weather without the August load.
Early morning at the harbour, when the boats come in and the town belongs to itself. Late afternoon gives the best light on the castle from the quay.
Winter is when the limonaia is roofed and working, though the museum runs reduced hours or closes.
How to experience Torri del Benaco
If you have two hours
The castle and limonaia together take about an hour. Do them first, then the harbour, then the lanes behind it — in that order, because the museum explains what you are then looking at.
If you want what others miss
Ask at the museum for directions to the petroglyphs. They are above the town on open rock, unsignposted enough that most visitors never see them, and much easier to find with instructions.
If you are here in winter
Winter is when the limonaia is actually assembled and roofed, which is the thing it exists to do. Museum hours are reduced, so check — but the structure doing its job is a different sight from the empty frame.
Responsible travel tips
The harbour is a working one. Keep clear of the quay where boats are landing and nets are being handled.
The petroglyphs are unprotected prehistoric carvings on open rock. Do not touch, chalk, wet or take rubbings from them — all of these are done, and all of them damage the surface.
The limonaia is a living collection of trees, not a display. Do not pick fruit.
Torri is quieter than its neighbours and its residents value that. Arriving by ferry and keeping the noise down in the lanes is the whole ask.
The castle museum is small and municipally run. Its admission is what keeps the petroglyph and fishing material conserved.
