Isola della Pescheria

The Isola della Pescheria is a small island in one of Treviso's canals, made for the fish market and still holding it. The water runs on both sides, willows hang over it, and the whole arrangement exists because a running current carries away what a fish market produces.

This is a working market and the people in it are trading, not performing. Ask before photographing stallholders at close range.

The canal water is part of the Sile system, spring-fed and unusually clean, and nothing should go into it.

Buying at the market or drinking at the bars around it puts money directly into the small businesses that keep the island in use rather than turning it into a viewpoint.

Free and open. The market itself trades in the morning, roughly Tuesday to Saturday, and that is when there is something to see; by afternoon it is an empty structure in a pretty setting.

Five minutes' walk from Piazza dei Signori. The bars around it open early.
