Treviso City Walls

Treviso's walls are among the earliest surviving examples of fortification designed for gunpowder. Built for Venice by Fra Giocondo between 1509 and 1518 after the League of Cambrai nearly destroyed the Republic, they are low, thick and angled rather than tall, and they still ring the historic centre almost completely.

The walls are a public park that residents use daily for running, walking and cycling, and treating them as shared local space rather than a sight is closer to their function.
The ditch is part of the same spring-fed water system as the Sile and supports wildlife along its length; staying on the paths matters more here than the setting suggests.

Plan Your Visit
Free and open at all hours, as a public park rather than a monument with a ticket. The full circuit takes about an hour and a half on foot, or half that by bike.
Access points are frequent, with the easiest from Porta San Tomaso on the north side or near the station on the south. The bastions are used as venues for summer events.
When to Visit
Late afternoon, when the rampart catches low sun and the city is below on one side and open water on the other. It is also the coolest place in Treviso on a summer evening.
Autumn is best for the trees along the circuit. Some stretches are unlit after dark.
