How to Get Around Morocco

Trains are excellent along the Atlantic corridor. Al Boraq, Africa's first high-speed line, runs Tangier to Casablanca in just over two hours, and ordinary services link Rabat, Fès, Meknès and Marrakesh comfortably.

CTM and Supratours coaches cover everywhere the train does not, reliably and with reserved seats. They are the sensible way to reach the south.

Grands taxis — shared, usually old Mercedes — run fixed intercity routes and leave when full. Buying all six seats charters the car.

Hiring a driver for a multi-day Atlas and desert loop is common and often no dearer than self-driving once fuel and stress are counted. Mountain roads are narrow and switchbacked.

Medinas are closed to cars. Park outside and expect to walk, or use a handcart porter for luggage — a normal arrangement, agreed in advance.
