Why Plan a Trip to Africa

Changed

Few continents offer this much contrast in one grouping: Egypt's pyramids and Nile temples, Morocco's medinas and Sahara dunes, and Tunisia's Mediterranean coastline and Roman ruins in the north; East Africa's safari heartlands in Kenya and Tanzania, home to the Great Migration and Kilimanjaro; Zambia's Victoria Falls and Malawi's freshwater lake in south-central Africa; South Africa's own compact version of the whole continent's range, from Cape Town's coastline to Kruger's wildlife; and the palm-lined beaches and coral reefs of Mauritius and Seychelles in the Indian Ocean.

It is also a continent of deep human history — from some of humanity's oldest known archaeological sites in East Africa, to ancient Egyptian civilization, to centuries of trade routes connecting North Africa to the Mediterranean and sub-Saharan Africa to the Indian Ocean world.

    Responsible Travel Tips

    Changed

Wildlife tourism is central to much of this region's appeal — Kenya and Tanzania's safari circuits, Zambia's Victoria Falls area, and South Africa's game reserves all depend on the same ecosystems tourism can either support or strain. Choosing operators who follow real conservation guidelines (keeping a respectful distance from animals, staying on designated tracks, never encouraging an animal to perform or be fed) makes a genuine difference, and reputable conservancies often channel a direct share of visitor fees into local anti-poaching and habitat protection work.

    • Community-based tourism — locally owned lodges, guides, and craft cooperatives, common across Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia specifically — keeps a larger share of tourism income within the communities whose land and wildlife make the visit possible, compared to foreign-owned all-inclusive alternatives.

    • Cultural and historical sites — Egypt's temples and tombs, Morocco's medinas, and North Africa's Roman ruins — carry real conservation sensitivities (foot traffic, flash photography, touching ancient surfaces); following posted rules protects sites for future visitors, not just current one.

    • Marine environments in Mauritius and Seychelles specifically face real coral reef pressure from both climate change and tourism itself — reef-safe sunscreen and never touching or standing on coral are small choices with a real cumulative effect.

    • Water scarcity is a genuine, sometimes overlooked issue across parts of this region, particularly southern and eastern Africa during dry-season months — mindful water use at accommodations matters more here than in most travel destinations.

    Best Destinations By Month

    Changed

This grouping spans North Africa, East Africa, southern Africa, and the Indian Ocean islands, each with a genuinely different climate calendar rather than one shared "best time."

North Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia) is most comfortable in spring and autumn (March-May, September-November), avoiding both summer's intense heat (especially inland and in the Sahara) and winter's occasional coastal chill and rain.

East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania) has two dry seasons that bracket its own wet periods — roughly June to October and January to February are the most popular safari windows, with the Great Migration's river crossings typically falling around July to September depending on rainfall.

South-central and southern Africa (Malawi, Zambia, South Africa) generally favor the dry winter months (May to September) for wildlife viewing, when animals concentrate around permanent water sources and dense vegetation thins out — Victoria Falls itself, by contrast, is most dramatic just after the wet season (roughly March to May), when water volume peaks.

Mauritius and Seychelles are warm year-round, with a cyclone season (roughly November to April, more relevant to Mauritius than Seychelles) and a drier, slightly cooler window (May to November) that many visitors find most comfortable.
