Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year in mid-April, combines religious and family practices with public water celebrations. UNESCO inscribed the tradition in 2023. In Bangkok, celebration areas can become extremely crowded and road access changes; use the current official programme.
Loy Krathong usually falls in November according to the lunar calendar and focuses attention on waterways. Locations and environmental rules vary. Choose an organised event and follow current instructions on acceptable materials rather than releasing an object wherever water is visible.
Royal and Buddhist ceremonies may use the Chao Phraya, major temples or processional routes. They do not follow a routine tourism calendar. A Royal Barge Procession is reserved for significant occasions, so confirm official announcements and expect rehearsals or security zones to alter river movement when one is scheduled.
Bangkok also carries a dense calendar of art, music, design, food and neighbourhood events. Their impact is local rather than uniform: one venue corridor may be full while another district is unaffected. Check organiser, transit and weather information together.
