How to get around Bangkok
Getting around
Walk within a district, not across the whole city. The Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho form one concentrated area, while a ferry completes the connection to Wat Arun. Heat, broad roads and uneven footways make the practical route harder than the map distance.
BTS Skytrain and MRT handle many longer journeys through the modern city. The networks use separate fare systems, so a connection may require leaving one paid area and buying or tapping into another. BTS service generally runs from 06:00 to midnight; verify the last train for the exact station and direction.
Current BTS single-journey fares run from THB 17 to THB 62. MRT pricing depends on line and distance; use the operator's fare calculator rather than an old fare table. Keep the card or token until the exit gate and follow current payment rules.
Chao Phraya Express Boat services can be the clearest route among river districts. Routes, flag colours, piers and operating periods differ. As checked 8 October 2026, the orange-flag service listed a THB 19 flat fare. Read the current pier board and operator schedule instead of assuming every boat stops everywhere.
Taxis and app-booked cars are useful for the final gap, late journeys or places away from rail, but road time is unpredictable. Ask metered taxis to use the meter, confirm tolls separately and match the vehicle details for app bookings. Motorbike taxis reduce time but add substantial road risk.

Rail
Use BTS and MRT for cross-city movement whenever they align with the route. Maps make interchange stations clear, but fares and tickets remain network-specific. Service generally extends from early morning to midnight, with exact last trains varying by line and station.
River and canal services
Express boats and cross-river ferries turn the Chao Phraya into a transport corridor. Check the flag, destination and stop pattern before boarding. Canal boats serve different corridors and can involve quick boarding, narrow access and splash; they are useful only when they match the day's geography.
Airport transfers
Airport Rail Link connects Suvarnabhumi Airport with Phaya Thai via the city corridor. The official government guide lists THB 15–45 fares and service from 05:30 to midnight. A taxi may suit several passengers or accommodation away from rail, but allow for road delay.
Walking and accessible travel
Station lifts and accessible routes do not solve every final approach. Footways can be narrow, broken or obstructed, and some piers use steep or moving gangways. Check the exact station exit, pier and property entrance before a step-free journey.
Road transport
Use taxis for targeted gaps rather than building a day around repeated road crossings. Public buses reach far more of Bangkok than rail but routes can be difficult for a first visit. A rental car adds navigation, parking and congestion and is rarely useful for central sightseeing.
