London’s attractions divide into three groups, and it helps to know which you are dealing with.
The free national museums — the British Museum, the National Gallery, Tate Modern and Britain, the V and A, the Natural History and Science Museums — are open without charge and without booking, and are among the finest collections anywhere. Special exhibitions are ticketed.
The paid landmarks — the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Saint Paul’s, the London Eye, Kew Gardens — charge substantially and are best booked with a timed slot.
And the free outdoor city — the parks, the markets, the riverside, the Changing of the Guard, the views from Primrose Hill or Greenwich — which costs nothing and is arguably the better half.
Two or three things a day is the realistic pace; distances are larger than the Tube map suggests.
