Start with the city's structure. Balboa Park brings museums, gardens, exposition architecture and the San Diego Zoo into one large landscape. On the waterfront, the USS Midway Museum, Seaport Village and working harbour occupy very different parts of the same bay edge.
Use Mission Beach and neighbouring Belmont Park for the recreational coast, and La Jolla for cliffs, coves and marine life viewed at a respectful distance. The Gaslamp Quarter is most useful as a surviving commercial district beside newer downtown development. Petco Park makes sense on a game or tour day rather than as a stand-alone landmark.
