Best destinations by month

March through May usually gives the strongest balance for city walks, gardens and coast: mild temperatures, modest normal rainfall and less holiday pressure than midsummer. Grey marine cloud can settle near the coast in May and June even while inland neighbourhoods brighten.

July through September has the warmest climate normals and the heaviest beach demand. Reserve major paid attractions, expect event-driven hotel pressure and do not read a warm forecast as proof of safe swimming conditions.

October and November often suit a mixed city-and-coast visit, though hot, dry Santa Ana wind events can raise heat and fire risk. December through February remains mild by continental standards but contains most of the normal rain. Winter low tides improve tide-pool access, and Pacific gray-whale migration adds a seasonal reason to watch the ocean.
