Discover Miami
A concise introduction to Miami, its geography, history and culture.
Introduction
Miami is a low-lying city on the western shore of Biscayne Bay, built around the Miami River and shaped by Caribbean and Latin American migration. Visitors come for neighbourhood culture, waterfront museums, subtropical gardens, food, design and the contrast between a dense skyline and the bay.
The City of Miami is not the same place as Miami Beach. South Beach and the Art Deco district sit in a separate municipality across the water, though most trips combine both. On the mainland, Downtown and Brickell form the vertical core; Coconut Grove, Little Havana, Overtown, Wynwood and Little Haiti reveal different histories. Plan by cluster, use rail where it fits and leave time for the city beyond its postcard image.
Frequently asked questions
Is Miami the same as Miami Beach? No. The City of Miami is on the mainland; Miami Beach is a separate municipality across Biscayne Bay. South Beach, Ocean Drive and the Art Deco district are in Miami Beach.
How many days do I need? Three days covers a few strong mainland clusters and one short beach visit. Four or five days allows separate neighbourhood, museum, garden and Miami Beach days without constant cross-city travel.
Do I need a car? Not for a Downtown-and-inner-neighbourhood stay planned around transit. A car becomes useful for distant county attractions, but parking and traffic make it a poor default for every day.
When is the best weather? December through April is generally milder and drier. May through October is hotter, more humid and wetter; hurricane season runs June through November.
Can I visit Biscayne National Park from Downtown? Yes, but treat it as a separate excursion. The park's mainland visitor area is south of Miami and much of the park is water, so transport and any boat activity must be arranged deliberately.
Is Little Havana a museum district? No. It is a living neighbourhood with businesses, homes and cultural institutions. Visit with the same respect you would bring to any community.
