Ocracoke Lighthouse

Built in 1823 and still operating, the oldest working light in North Carolina. The tower itself is not open to climb, but the grounds are, and it is a short walk from the harbour.

The beach

Miles of Atlantic shoreline inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore with nothing built behind it. This is what most people come for, and it is reachable on foot or by bicycle from the village.

Springer's Point

A wooded point on the Pamlico Sound side, now a nature preserve, and the shore associated with Blackbeard's last days off the island.

The British Cemetery

The graves of sailors from HMT Bedfordshire, sunk offshore in 1942, tended under the Commonwealth War Graves Commission — an unexpected piece of the Second World War on a barrier island.

The Banker ponies

A herd descended from Spanish stock, kept in a pasture managed by the National Park Service on the road into the village.
