Two corridors, not one

What reads from outside as a single stone tunnel is internally divided into two parallel passages running side by side, so that prisoners being led in opposite directions never met. The division is invisible from the canal and is the clearest sign that the bridge was designed as working judicial infrastructure rather than as ornament.

The windows

Two small stone-grilled openings on each side are the bridge's only apertures. The perforated screens admit light and a fragmentary view of the lagoon while making a clear sightline -- in either direction -- impossible, which is the practical detail the bridge's entire romantic reputation was later built on.

The route it completes

The bridge is one link in a preserved sequence rather than a monument in isolation: courtroom, bridge, cell. Crossing it on the Doge's Palace's Secret Itineraries route is the only way to see it from the inside, and it delivers visitors into the Prigioni Nuove exactly as it once delivered the convicted.
