Libreria Acqua Alta

Libreria Acqua Alta is Venice's most photographed bookshop, its books stored in bathtubs, gondolas, and a full-size canoe as a genuinely practical response to the flooding that gives the shop its name. A staircase built entirely from waterlogged old encyclopedias leads out to a small courtyard overlooking a canal, making this one of the most purely charming stops in the city for anyone willing to browse rather than just photograph.

This is a working secondhand bookshop that has become one of the most photographed interiors in Venice, and the gap between those two things is the problem. Buying a book -- any book, they start at a couple of euros -- is what makes a visit a transaction rather than an extraction.

The aisles are genuinely narrow and stacked to head height. Bags, tripods and large groups knock stock over, and the stock is the business.

The cats live here. They are not props, and they have not consented to being picked up.

There is often a queue for the encyclopedia staircase. One or two photographs and stepping down lets it move; a full session at the top does not. The staircase is made of ruined books and is not structurally a staircase.

The shop sits on a residential calle with no capacity for crowds, and the neighbours live with the overflow. Coming early is as much about them as about your own visit.

Libreria Acqua Alta is free to enter and browse, near Campo Santa Maria Formosa, a short walk from St. Mark's Square. It gets genuinely crowded at peak hours given its social-media popularity -- an early morning or early evening visit gives a much better chance of browsing without a line for photos at the book staircase.
