Mercato di Sacca Fisola is a Friday-only market on Sacca Fisola, a largely residential artificial island at the western edge of Giudecca, about as far from Venice's tourist routes as a market gets. Vendors drive their stock in on trucks carried over by ferry, selling everything from fresh produce to vintage household goods and clothing straight off the truck bed.

This is a market for the people who live on the island and on Giudecca, with no visitor infrastructure of any kind -- no signage, no explanation and no expectation that anyone unfamiliar will turn up. Coming here is fine; coming here to photograph residents doing their weekly shop is not.

The secondhand side of the market -- clothing, shoes, household goods off the truck beds -- exists because it is cheap, for people for whom that matters. It is not a vintage market, and treating it as one misreads the room.

Sacca Fisola is among the least wealthy corners of Venice and one of the few where ordinary residents can still afford to live. Spending here, or simply not treating the place as a curiosity, is the whole of what is asked.

Getting here uses the ordinary vaporetto network, which is the right way -- the island has no capacity for anything else, and the Friday ferry is already carrying the vendors' trucks.

The market runs Fridays only, 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Sacca Fisola sits at the western end of Giudecca, reachable by vaporetto or on foot across the bridge from the rest of Giudecca -- worth combining with a wider Giudecca visit rather than a trip on its own.
