Overview

Changed

Orto delle Meraviglie -- the "Garden of Wonders" -- is a working organic garden inside the grounds of Venice's women's prison on Giudecca, tended by incarcerated women as part of a genuine rehabilitation program. Produce grown here is sold every week at a stand right outside the prison walls, making this one of the most unusual and quietly moving places to shop in Venice.

Quick Facts

    Visit Responsibly

    Changed

This is a prison. The women growing and selling this produce are serving sentences, and the stand is one of the very few points of contact between them and the city. That asks for ordinary courtesy and nothing else -- buy, talk if talked to, and do not treat the encounter as an experience.

Do not photograph the women at the stand, the gate or the walls. This is the clearest rule here and the one most likely to be broken by someone who has come for the story rather than the vegetables.

The garden exists as rehabilitation work run by the Rio Terà dei Pensieri cooperative since 1994 -- paid, skilled work with a trade at the end of it. Buying from the stand funds that directly, which is the entire reason it is on the street rather than inside.

Do not come as a sightseer to a prison. The stand is a shop; the garden behind it is somebody's sentence and somebody's chance, and it is not scenery.

    Changed

The garden itself is open only by reservation or during organized visits and special events, arranged through Rio Terà dei Pensieri directly -- it is not a walk-in attraction. The weekly produce stand on Fondamenta del Carcere, on Giudecca, is open to anyone and needs no booking; check with the cooperative for the current sale day and hours before visiting.
