Scuola Grande dei Carmini

Scuola Grande dei Carmini is one of Venice's grand confraternity halls, the last to be officially recognized as such and the only one of the six that ever admitted women as members. Its Chapter Room ceiling, painted by Giambattista Tiepolo over a decade, is one of his major late works -- and one of the less crowded places in the city to see it.

The admission fee maintains the building and its ceiling, and this is a case where the money is doing visible work: the scuola has none of the visitor numbers that fund San Rocco a few minutes away.

No flash. The Tiepolo panels are original oil on canvas in their original ceiling mountings, never removed to a museum, and they are conserved in a damp Venetian building.

Mirrors are usually available at the desk. Using one saves the neck and, more usefully, keeps people from lying on the floor or backing into the walls to get the angle.

Choosing this over San Rocco on a crowded day is a genuinely good swap: a comparable ceiling by a comparable painter, in the room it was painted for, in a building that needs the visit more.

Scuola Grande dei Carmini sits in Dorsoduro, on Campo Santa Margherita, close to the church of the Carmini it's named for. It's open to the public with an admission fee, and typically draws a much smaller crowd than the more famous Scuola Grande di San Rocco a short walk away.
