Discover Khan el-Khalili bazaar

The bazaar preserves much of its Mamluk and Ottoman-era architectural character — narrow, covered alleyways, ornately carved wooden mashrabiya screens on upper-floor windows, and stone archways marking entrances to different sections of the market. Al-Sanadiqiyah and several other lanes still bear the layout and building style of the medieval trading district that grew up around the original 14th-century caravanserai.

The neighboring Al-Azhar Mosque and Al-Hussein Mosque, both significant Islamic religious sites in their own right, sit immediately adjacent to the bazaar, reflecting the historic district's combined role as both a commercial and religious center for Cairo across many centuries.
