Introduction
Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of China rather than a sovereign state, with its own currency, legal system, immigration control and border.
It occupies a deep natural harbour on the southern Chinese coast, and the geography explains the skyline: with steep granite hills behind and water in front, the buildable land is a narrow strip, so the city went up. The result is among the densest concentrations of tall buildings anywhere.
What almost no visitor expects is that roughly three quarters of Hong Kong is countryside, and around 40% is protected country park — hills, reservoirs, beaches and hiking trails, reachable from Central in under an hour by public transport.
The territory is Hong Kong Island, Kowloon across the harbour, the New Territories behind it, and some 260 outlying islands.
