Verificato su Wikipedia — Emanuele Repetti described Brolio in 1846 as a pentagon of very solid walls twenty-four braccia high with bastions and covered walks, provided at each of the angles with openings and loopholes for spingarde and other projectiles, containing within the castle's enclosure the Baron's palace, the garden, the chapel, the vast annexes of the estate, and a tall square tower, the ancient cassero recalled in Florentine histories, together with the meadow around the ramparts., At Brolio the various epochs are easily distinguishable thanks to the different use of the ancient building stone, pietra serena, and of brick; of the castle proper only the base of the cassero, going back to the first years of the millennium, is recognisable as original, while the well-preserved walls are typical of medieval-Renaissance architecture., In 1835 Bettino Ricasoli had the architect Pietro Marchetti transform the ancient fortress into an English manor, using brick as the principal material, opening windows in the Tudor style and inserting crenellated turrets foreign to local architecture., The cappella di San Jacopo at Brolio, renewed between 1867 and 1869, has a gabled facade preceded by a double stone stair and a mosaic of its titular saint in the portal lunette; to the right of the entrance an inscription recalls its foundation in 1348. Inside, a nave divided into three cross-vaulted bays stands over a crypt where the Ricasoli are buried, and the altar mosaics were executed from 1874 by the Compagnia Venezia Murano after cartoons by Alessandro Franchi still conserved in the castle., After the Florentine conquest of Siena, Brolio was converted into a prestigious seigneurial residence and into an imposing agricultural and above all wine-producing estate.
