Anagni's sights are concentrated on its acropolis, and they are stacked on top of each other.

The cathedral is the centre of everything. It was built on the temple of Ceres — the city was a seat of temples and sanctuaries — and the rooms adjoining it are where Boniface VIII was taken prisoner on 7 September 1303.

The medieval town around it survives as a whole: small twisting streets and steep lanes inside Roman boundary walls, on the acropolis that was already the centre of the Hernician city and was partially defended by walls in opus quasi-quadratum.

Beyond the town, the imperial villa at Villa Magna nearby was owned by Marcus Aurelius, who was one of several emperors — with Septimius Severus, Commodus and Caracalla — who summered here to escape the heat of Rome.

And at Fontana Ranuccio lies one of Italy's most important early human sites.
