Bolsena Events
Bolsena's year turns on one feast that it gave the world, and on a lake season.
Corpus Domini is the town's own feast in a way it is nowhere else: the solemnity was instituted by Urban IV after the miracle reported here in 1263, and was then extended to the whole Catholic Church.
Summer is the lake season, when the population rises from about 3,700 to close to 10,000.
May, June and September are the balance points, with usable water and a town that still belongs to its residents.
Religious feasts otherwise centre on Santa Cristina, the eleventh-century basilica raised to minor basilica by Paul VI in August 1976.
June also carries a darker anniversary: in June 1944 the territory was the theatre of a battle between German and British forces in which 597 Commonwealth men died.
Checking what is actually on. Regione Lazio publishes a region-wide events calendar on its VisitLazio portal, listing festivals, sagre and historical re-enactments by comune and by date. Local feast days move with the liturgical calendar and small-town programmes are often fixed only weeks ahead, so confirm there rather than relying on last year's dates.
