Palestrina Events

Palestrina's calendar is archaeological, musical and seasonal.

Spring and autumn are the visiting seasons for the sanctuary, which is an open, stacked site best walked in mild weather.

Music is the town's other claim: as the birthplace of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, the town's name is attached permanently to Renaissance polyphony.

Weekends bring the day-trip traffic from Rome, 35 kilometres west along the Via Prenestina.

Summer is cooler here than in the city thanks to the altitude, which makes it a reasonable escape, though the sanctuary's terraces are exposed.

Winter is cold for Lazio — zone E, 2,141 degree-days — and the site is at its emptiest.

Checking what is actually on. Regione Lazio publishes a region-wide events calendar on its VisitLazio portal, listing festivals, sagre and historical re-enactments by comune and by date. Local feast days move with the liturgical calendar and small-town programmes are often fixed only weeks ahead, so confirm there rather than relying on last year's dates.
