Sermoneta's attractions stack from prehistory to the Renaissance within a few kilometres.
The castle dominates: massive, built by the Annibaldi and then purchased and expanded by the Caetani in the thirteenth century.
In the walled town, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a thirteenth-century Romanesque building — sometimes erroneously called a cathedral — with San Giuseppe, mainly of the sixteenth century, and San Michele, mainly of the twelfth, still standing.
Below the town lies the Cistercian Valvisciolo Abbey.
And above the abbey runs the ridge of Monte Carbolino, where the ancient settlement of Valvisciolo stood and where remains of large walls in polygonal work are documented — with the necropolis of Caracupa, holding about a hundred Iron Age inhumations, as its cemetery.
