Subiaco Events

Subiaco's calendar is monastic first, and the two Benedictine dates are the ones that change the town.

21 March and 11 July are the principal Benedictine feasts, and the monasteries above the town are at their fullest around them. If the reason for the visit is the Sacro Speco rather than the crowd, these are days to avoid; if it is the living community, they are the days to come.

Holy Week and Easter fill the churches of the old town as they do across Lazio, and the climb between town and monasteries becomes a procession route rather than a road.

Summer brings the valley's outdoor season: rafting, canoeing, kayaking and trout fishing on the Aniene, and walking, orienteering and nordic walking in the hills around the town.

Autumn is quieter and is when the beech forest on the plateau is worth the drive up to Monte Livata.

Winter turns Monte Livata into a small ski area, which is the one season when the mountain above the town draws more people than the monasteries below it.

Checking what is actually on. Regione Lazio publishes a region-wide events calendar on its VisitLazio portal, listing festivals, sagre and historical re-enactments by comune and by date. Local feast days move with the liturgical calendar and small-town programmes are often fixed only weeks ahead, so confirm there rather than relying on last year's dates.
