Rocca di Asolo Site Features

The Rocca is a polygonal enclosure following the shape of the summit, with high curtain walls and a tower at the higher end. There is no keep, no hall, no domestic quarter -- the interior is open ground.

That emptiness is the point and worth understanding rather than being disappointed by: this was a refuge and a signal post, garrisoned when needed, not a residence.

Construction is rough stone with brick dressings, patched over several centuries, and the walls can be walked along their inner side.

The hundred horizons

The view Carducci named the town for -- Monte Grappa, the Dolomites on clear days, and the plain running to the lagoon.

The walk up

Twenty-five minutes from the centre on a marked path, past the old town walls.

The empty enclosure

Walls and towers around open ground, which is what a medieval citadel actually looked like.

Evening light

Late in the day is when the view earns its reputation.

The Rocca crowns the hill above Asolo, which stands slightly forward of the Colli Asolani so that the views are unobstructed in nearly every direction. Monte Grappa is north-west, the plain runs south past Treviso, and the Dolomites close the northern horizon.
