The building is a former Franciscan convent, plain and functional, arranged around a cloister. It has been adapted rather than rebuilt, so the galleries are cellular and modest in scale, which suits the paintings.

The adjoining church of San Francesco, thirteenth-century, is worth stepping into for its fresco fragments and its wooden crucifix.

The museum occupies the former Franciscan convent beside the church of San Francesco, in the middle of the old town a few minutes from Piazza Libertà and about ten from the bridge.
