The square is a long rectangle, arcaded on both flanks, closed at one end by the church of San Giovanni Battista with its neoclassical front.
The Loggia del Comune on the north side is the architectural event: an open ground-floor loggia under a frescoed upper storey, with a fifteenth-century clock.
Two columns stand in the square, one carrying the winged lion of St Mark -- the standard Venetian statement of sovereignty, found from here to Bergamo.
The scale is the point. This is a market square for a town of forty thousand, not a display space, and the continuous arcades make it usable in any weather.
