For the shelving. The sea here goes out shallow for a very long way, which is the single physical fact the whole resort rests on and the reason this became a family coast rather than a scenic one. Small children can wade out a hundred metres.

For Venice at arm's length. The bus to Punta Sabbioni and the boat from there reach San Marco in about 35 minutes — so you can treat one of the most expensive cities in Italy as a day trip and sleep somewhere with a beach.

And for the fact that it is good at what it is. Fifteen kilometres of lifeguarded sand, two of Italy's largest water parks, a pedestrian street that runs for kilometres, and the only real skyline on this coast. If you want an old town, this is the wrong resort and the Veneto has thirty better ones — but nowhere does the family-beach job at this scale.

June and early September are the best: warm sea, everything open, and far fewer people than the peak.

July and August are the peak in earnest, with Italian, German and Austrian holidays overlapping. Expect full beaches, slow roads and the highest prices of the year.

May and late September are cheap and pleasant, though the sea is cool and some businesses are shut.

Winter is largely closed, apart from the sand nativity exhibition over Christmas — the one thing that brings visitors here out of season.

If you have a week with children

Beach in the morning while the sand is still walkable barefoot, indoors or a water park through the afternoon heat, Via Bafile in the evening when the whole town is out. That rhythm is what the resort is built around, and fighting it is uncomfortable.

If you want a day off the sand

Bus to Punta Sabbioni, boat to San Marco. Go early, come back late, and skip the car entirely — parking in Venice costs more than the boat and the traffic back is worse than anything on the beach.

If you want what others miss

Cycle east to the Laguna del Mort. It is the one stretch of this coast that was never built on, and after a few days of umbrellas in rows it explains what the shoreline actually is.

Jesolo's population multiplies many times over in July and August, and the water, waste and traffic systems run at their limits. June and September are materially better for the town and for the visitor.

The surviving dune fragments and the pine strip are fenced for good reason — dune vegetation is what holds the beach in place. Stay off them.

Use the boat to Venice rather than driving. It is faster, far cheaper, and keeps one more car out of a city that has spent twenty years trying to reduce them.

Cycle within the resort. The ground is completely flat, the routes are marked, and summer traffic is the town's worst problem.
