The cavea and the Ala

Reconstructed stone steps now form the cavea around the arena floor. Outside, the surviving Ala preserves a short section of the original outer ring and gives a sense of the lost monumental façade.

A working stage, and what it may not touch

During the performance season the arena floor becomes a large stage, with scenery and seating configurations that vary by production. Daytime sightseeing and evening events are separate experiences with different tickets and access rules.

The constraint that shapes every production is that nothing may be fixed to the Roman fabric. Sets weighing tens of tonnes are assembled on the floor each summer and struck again at the end of the season; staging is freestanding, loads are spread across the floor rather than pinned to the walls, and lighting and sound hang from towers standing on the floor, not from the stone. Between performances the scenery is stored in the arches of the second ring — the same vaults that held the original access stairs.

The audience still sits on the gradinata, the unnumbered upper steps, exactly as a Roman audience did. The candles handed out before curtain-up are there because those tiers have no lighting of their own and never have.
