New York City Events
Spring expands the street and park calendar, with parades, cultural festivals and outdoor performance returning across the boroughs. Dates and routes change, and a parade can divide a neighbourhood's transport network even when the rest of the city runs normally.
June through August is the broad outdoor season. City-supported concerts, theatre and film screenings use parks in all five boroughs. The programme is dispersed, often free and more revealing of local audiences than a single central festival; consult the current city calendar.
Late August into September brings the US Open in Queens. November brings the five-borough New York City Marathon and the Thanksgiving parade, both with major local street and transport effects. Exact schedules must be checked with the organisers.
December 31 concentrates exceptional pressure around Times Square for New Year's Eve. Entry rules, access points and security arrangements are published for each edition. Treat it as a planned event rather than an ordinary Midtown evening, or choose a borough programme away from the central viewing zone.
