When the Basque and French settled in St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Canada in the 1500’s, they found a remarkable place to fish to support their livelihood, and a harbor that is on the leeward side providing excellent shelter. The town thrived over the centuries later Jacques Cartier, the explorer, also found the settlement. More people arrived, and with the natural elements of the surrounding are, this has become an excellent vacation spot. One of the most popular attractions in this area is to take a boat out to see the icebergs that are floating just off shore – not the normal tourist attraction that tourists see in very many areas of the planet. 3. There is a settlement called L’Anse aux Meadows that was settled by the Vikings around 1003, which is an incredible archaeological area on just north of the village. 4. Probably the most popular of the tourists’ attractions in this area is watching the whales as these magnificent creatures breach and frolic in the icy waters. St. Anthony is an excellent vacation place for people who love outdoor activities and nature.
