Begin with structure, not a checklist. The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island explain the harbour and national migration history, while Lower Manhattan connects colonial traces, the financial district and the 9/11 Memorial. Nearby, the Brooklyn Bridge makes the relationship between Manhattan, Brooklyn and the East River physically legible.

Midtown's concentration is different: Grand Central Terminal, the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Times Square and Broadway are close on a map but reward different hours. Choose a viewpoint rather than collecting several.

For museums, match the collection to the day. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, American Museum of Natural History and Brooklyn Museum are not interchangeable. One substantial visit paired with its surrounding park or neighbourhood is usually stronger than two rushed institutions.
