South Africa delivers two world-class trips in one country — Big Five game viewing and a Mediterranean cape with 300-year-old vineyards — at prices well below what either costs elsewhere, because the rand goes a long way.

The main travel issue

They are 1,500 km apart with opposite seasons: the Kruger is best in the dry winter, when the bush thins and animals concentrate at water, while the Cape is at its best in the southern summer, which is the Kruger's wet.

The solution

Pick which matters more and build around it, or accept a compromise in April-May or September-October, when both are acceptable rather than ideal. Fly between them. And budget for a car in the Cape — the winelands and the peninsula have no practical alternative.

• Western Cape

If you travel slowly

Two weeks in the Western Cape: Cape Town, the winelands, and the coast east toward Hermanus and the Garden Route. It is the most self-contained part of the country.

If you want to see the essentials

Cape Town and the peninsula, three or four nights in a reserve near Kruger, and the winelands. Twelve days with one internal flight.

If you seek local character

A braai, which is a social form rather than a meal; a township tour run by residents rather than an outside operator; and the Bo-Kaap for Cape Malay food and the history behind it.

If you want to go beyond the obvious

The Drakensberg escarpment for hiking and San rock art, and the Karoo — semi-desert, enormous skies, and among the darkest night skies accessible anywhere.

South Africa’s character is plural by constitutional design and shaped by a transition that is still recent.

Twelve official languages

isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, English, Sesotho and others all have official status, with South African Sign Language added in 2023. Most people speak several, and code-switching mid-sentence is normal.

Apartheid within memory

It ended in 1994. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Apartheid Museum and the District Six Museum are part of a deliberate public reckoning, and the economic geography it created is still visible in every city.

The braai as common ground

Cooking meat over wood is the one social ritual that crosses every community, with its own vocabulary and its own public holiday observance.

Extraordinary endemism

The Cape floral kingdom is the smallest and richest of the world’s six, and fynbos grows nowhere else — a source of genuine local pride.

Choose township tours run by the community. Resident-led operators in Langa, Khayelitsha and Soweto put the money where the visit happens; outside operators driving through with the windows up do not, and the difference is obvious once you look for it.

Avoid captive-wildlife interactions — lion cub petting and "walking with lions" feed the canned-hunting industry, where hand-reared animals are later shot in enclosures. No legitimate conservation facility lets tourists handle big cats.

Rhino poaching remains severe. Do not post geotagged photographs of rhino, and follow guides' instructions about sightings; the location data is genuinely used.

Water is scarce in the Cape, which came within weeks of running dry in 2018. Short showers are a local norm rather than a gesture.

The two halves of the country run opposite seasons, so there is no single answer.

The Cape is best November to March — dry, warm, long evenings — though December and January are peak, expensive and windy. The southeaster that blows over Table Mountain is a daily summer feature.

Game viewing is best May to September, the dry winter: thinner vegetation, animals concentrated at waterholes, no mud and far fewer mosquitoes. Mornings are genuinely cold in an open vehicle.

April-May and September-October are the compromise months, acceptable for both, with fewer crowds and lower prices.

Whale watching off Hermanus runs roughly June to November, and the Namaqualand wildflower bloom is a short window in August and September.
