Fondaco dei Tedeschi

The Fondaco dei Tedeschi is a grand former trading house on the Grand Canal, right beside the Rialto Bridge, that spent five centuries as a warehouse and hostel for German merchants before a 2016 renovation turned it into a luxury shopping complex with a celebrated rooftop terrace. As of 2025 that terrace and the shops beneath it have closed, but the building itself -- one of the largest on the canal, with a history stretching back to the 13th century -- remains a striking piece of Venice's commercial past.

The building sits on the pinch point between the Rialto Bridge and the Mercerie, where the pavement narrows and thousands of people pass hourly. Stopping to photograph the facade from the bridge approach obstructs one of the few routes with no alternative -- the view from a vaporetto costs nothing and blocks no one.

Its closure is worth reading as more than an inconvenience. A department store in a 16th-century trading house was itself a comment on what Venice's centre is now for, and the debate over what should replace it is an active local argument rather than a settled question.
