Mercato di Rio Terà San Leonardo is a small daily produce market on one of Cannaregio's busiest everyday streets, a short walk from the train station. It draws far more locals than tourists, offering a quieter, unpolished look at how Venetians actually shop, in contrast to the Rialto Market's crowds and ceremony.

Nothing here is arranged for visitors, and that is the whole appeal -- but it also means the ordinary courtesies matter more. The queue at a stall is for people buying, and standing in it to take a photograph is not the same activity.

Buying a small amount of fruit costs very little and changes a visitor from an obstacle into a customer. Venice loses these everyday shops steadily to souvenir retail, and the ones on this street survive on residents' spending.

The street is narrow enough at market hours that a stopped group blocks it completely, and it is a genuine artery -- people are getting to work and to the station. Standing to the side of the flow rather than in it is the entire etiquette.

The market runs Monday to Saturday, generally following ordinary shop hours (roughly morning through early evening), and is closed Sundays. It sits directly on Rio Terà San Leonardo, part of the Strada Nova route between Santa Lucia train station and Rialto, making it an easy stop for anyone walking that route.
