Capri Island

Practical information for visiting Capri Island

Connectivity & Internet

Capri has no road or rail connection to the mainland. Year-round sea links run from Naples and Sorrento, while additional routes from the Amalfi Coast and other islands are seasonal. Caremar lists Naples crossings of about one hour by fast ferry and about one hour twenty minutes by ferry. Its Sorrento service takes about thirty minutes.

Naples departures use Molo Beverello for fast craft and Calata di Massa for ferries. Hydrofoils are more exposed to cancellation in bad weather, so check the operator on travel day. The nearest major air gateway is Naples. Leave a substantial buffer before a flight or long-distance train, especially when the forecast is unsettled.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

Petty theft is the most relevant crime risk for visitors in Italy's crowded transport and attraction settings. On Capri, keep bags closed around Marina Grande, bus queues and packed central streets. Do not leave a phone loose on an outdoor table beside a busy pedestrian route.

Terrain creates the more distinctive hazards. Cliff paths, worn steps and polished stone can be slippery. Wear shoes with grip, keep behind barriers and respect every closure. Do not assume Via Krupp is open; municipal notices can close it for maintenance or slope risk.

Inside the Blue Grotto, swimming and jumping into the water are prohibited. Follow the boatman's instructions, and keep children accompanied.

Ferry and bus choices belong in Getting around Capri. Check official alerts during strong wind or wildfire conditions, and follow local instructions if access to a path or coastal area changes.

Health considerations

Capri's Capilupi hospital includes an emergency department and a multidisciplinary clinical unit. The island also has a round-the-clock ambulance station reached through 118. Buy travel insurance because serious cases may still require transfer.

Carry a valid EHIC or GHIC if you are eligible for medically necessary state care. These cards do not replace insurance and do not cover every transfer or private service. Use a pharmacy for minor problems and directions to local care.

Heat, stairs and exposed paths cause the most predictable strain. Carry water, start long walks before the hottest hours and wear footwear suited to smooth stone and uneven steps.

Emergency information

General emergency: call 112 free of charge for police, fire or medical assistance. Give the municipality, nearest named landmark and path or street. Capri and Anacapri are separate municipalities, which matters when describing a location.

Ambulance: call 118. Capilupi hospital is on the island and has an emergency department. Follow dispatcher instructions if a patient is on a path, boat or inaccessible stairway.

At sea: contact 112 and alert the vessel crew or port authority immediately. Do not attempt an independent rescue near cliffs, cave entrances or moving boats.
