Terracina's sights are vertical: a temple above, a road cut below, and the sea in front.
The Temple of Jupiter Anxur crowns Monte Sant'Angelo at 226 metres. Anxur was the Volscian name of Jupiter himself as a youth — Iuppiter Anxur — and the tutelary god of the city, venerated on what was then the Mons Neptunius.
At the foot of the promontory is the Roman cut through Pisco Montano, the engineering solution that finally took the Via Appia past the cliff. Its depth is marked on the vertical rock at intervals of ten Roman feet, the lowest reading CXX — thirty-six metres.
The historic centre sits between the two, on the spur, with the Appia running through it.
And the beaches run either side: the eastern beach, and the Lungomare Circe with the western beach towards the Circeo.
