Castello di Grinzane Cavour
Last updated on October 14, 2026Why visit Castello di Grinzane Cavour
Because this is the only building UNESCO inscribed in the Langhe — the other two components are entire landscapes — and because Cavour ran the place as mayor from the age of twenty-two.
Inside are the Langhe Museum, the Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour — open since 1967, among the oldest in Italy and the first opened in Piedmont — and, since 19 June 2021, the Museo In Vigna laid out in the vineyard around the walls. Full admission €8. It opens 10:00 to 19:00 from 1 April to 31 October and 10:00 to 18:00 the rest of the year — and it is closed every Tuesday.
The friction is timing. In the first days of November the castle hosts the Asta Mondiale del Tartufo Bianco d'Alba, the world white truffle auction, and the village is a different proposition that week.
The tactic: this and Barolo's castle in one day is the obvious pairing and about fifteen minutes apart — but book a guided tour at least a week ahead if you want one, because that is the operator's rule.

Visit responsibly
The truffle auction gives its money away. The Asta Mondiale del Tartufo Bianco d'Alba held here has no profit purpose: the proceeds from the sale of the white truffles — Tuber Magnatum Pico — are entirely devolved to hospitals, medical research institutes and other charitable bodies. Bidding is not the only way to support it; attending the village that week is.
The vineyards are the listed thing. The castle is the one building among the three Langhe components UNESCO listed in 2014, and it is listed because of the landscape it governs. The Museo In Vigna exists to be walked instead of the working rows.
Buy the wine where the growers pooled it. The Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour has been running since 1967 and was the first regional wine shop in Piedmont — a collective shop front for a territory of small producers.
Book the guide properly or do without. One week's notice, minimum 15 people: that is a small operator protecting its staffing, not a formality.

Closed every Tuesday — the operator names one exception, Tuesday 2 June. The English-language page gives only a flat 10:00–18:00 and no closing day; the Italian booking page is the one to trust.
Admission. Full €8.00. Reduced €6.00 — and note the wording, which is groups of more than 25 people, over-65s and students, not small groups. Schools €4.00. Children 6 to 14, €3.00. An audio-guide is €3.00 on top.
Free: museum subscription holders, Torino+Piemonte Card holders, disabled visitors with their carer, and children under 6.

Access. Visitors with motor disabilities can reach the ground-floor wine shop and the Territory room by mobile ramp; full museum access is more limited.
The Museo In Vigna, outside in the vineyard, is described as always open.

When to visit
Do not come on a Tuesday. The castle is closed every Tuesday, which is the single most useful thing on this page — the English-language pages do not say so.
Hours run 10:00 to 19:00 from 1 April to 31 October, last admission 18:00, and 10:00 to 18:00 the rest of the year, last admission 17:00. Either way it is an easy half-day and an obvious pairing with Barolo's castle fifteen minutes away.
Early November is the exception. The Asta Mondiale del Tartufo Bianco d'Alba — the world white truffle auction — is held at the castle at the beginning of November each year, drawing figures from Italian politics, culture and the international jet set. Spectacular if you want it, and a reason to check the calendar if you do not.
Autumn generally is truffle season across the Langhe and the busiest time here.
If you want a guided tour, the calendar decides for you: reservation is compulsory at least a week ahead, with a minimum of 15 people. A couple turning up on the day will be visiting unguided.
The Museo In Vigna is outdoors and always open, so a late arrival after the castle has shut still has something to walk round.
