Castello di Grinzane Cavour site plan

The castle

The castle is well preserved and reads as one solid mass from the vineyards below. The plan is rectangular, with a keep that occupies an entire wing, and a U-shaped range decorated with four turrets — two square, and two external, hanging, on a round plan.

The windows tell you which sides mattered. Many open on the main east and west fronts; the north face has only two; and the south side carries numerous windows, neatly aligned on three floors. A defensive north wall and a domestic south one, in the same building.

Inside, the Langhe Museum runs through the historic rooms — rural civilisation, ethnographic trails, and the Cavour relics — in spaces that keep their painted ceilings and frescoes.

On the ground floor is the Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour, pouring and selling across the territory, with guided tastings led by sommeliers.

There is a modern half you will not see from outside. On 23 October 2010 a new building by the architect Giorgio Teggi was inaugurated, and it is constructed inside the hill the old manor stands on — offices, a teaching room of 60 seats and a congress hall of over 250, buried rather than attached.

Outside, since 19 June 2021, the Museo In Vigna circles the castle: a teaching route on the history of wine and the cultivation of the vine, and the operator describes it as always open.

Key highlights

The keep

It occupies an entire wing, and it is probably the oldest thing here — the primitive nucleus that the rest of the castle was built out from.

The four turrets

Two square and two round, and the round pair are external and hanging — corbelled off the wall rather than rising from the ground.

The arms of the marchese di Busca

Found under the plaster of some of the rooms. The 15th-century ownership of this castle is known because somebody stripped a wall.

The Cavour relics

In the Langhe Museum, in the rooms with their painted ceilings and frescoes. Cavour was not a visitor here; he ran the estate and the comune for the better part of two decades.

The Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour

Open since 1967 — one of the oldest in Italy and the first regional wine shop opened in Piedmont, with more than half a century behind it. Sommelier-led tastings.

Giorgio Teggi's buried wing, 2010

A congress hall of over 250 seats and a teaching room of 60, built inside the hill so that the castle's silhouette is unchanged. Inaugurated 23 October 2010 with the exhibition Brume di Langa: paesaggi, oggetti, pensieri, curated by Letizia Rivetti and Giordano Berti.

The Museo In Vigna

Opened 19 June 2021, a route around the castle on the history of wine and the growing of the vine. Open-air, and described by the operator as always open.
