Origins

The Servite convent and church of Santa Caterina were built in the fourteenth century, and Tomaso da Modena frescoed the Cappella degli Innocenti within them.

Turning points

The convent was suppressed under Napoleon and spent the nineteenth and much of the twentieth century in military and then decaying civil use.

Influential people

Tomaso da Modena's Saint Ursula cycle was painted around 1355 for the church of Santa Margherita. When that church was demolished, the frescoes were detached and eventually brought here.

Cultural evolution

The 1944 bombing damaged the complex heavily. Restoration ran for decades, and the museum in its present form opened only in 2000.

Present-day significance

It now holds Treviso's archaeological and art collections together, and is the only place the city's own major painter can be seen at full scale.
