Geography and Significance

Torcello sits in the shallow northern lagoon, roughly ten kilometres from Venice and a few hundred metres from Burano, on water too shallow in places for anything but small craft.

Its shape is the result of failure rather than design. The channels that once carried seagoing trade here silted up, and the island reverted to marsh, reed bed, and small fields -- so the approach along the canal from the landing passes farmland and open water rather than buildings, which is the reverse of every other inhabited island in the lagoon.

The cathedral's detached campanile is the only vertical marker for some distance, visible across the flats from Burano and from the channels well before the island itself resolves. From its top the whole northern lagoon is legible: the fish farms, the mudflats that surface at low tide, and Venice as a low line on the southern horizon.
