Castelvecchio

Castelvecchio ("Old Castle") is a fortified medieval castle on the Adige River in Verona, built by the ruling Scaliger family as both a military stronghold and a visible symbol of their power over the city -- today it houses the Museo di Castelvecchio, and its own mid-20th-century restoration by architect Carlo Scarpa is considered a landmark of modern museum design in its own right.

Attached to the castle, the fortified Ponte Scaligero bridge crosses the Adige directly from the fortress -- not a public crossing but an escape route, built so Verona's rulers could flee the city if their own subjects, rather than an external enemy, ever turned against them.

Ponte Scaligero remains a functioning pedestrian route for Verona residents as well as a landmark -- it's a genuine crossing, not only a viewpoint, and moving with rather than against the flow of foot traffic is appreciated.

The Museo di Castelvecchio charges an entry fee and is typically closed on Mondays, standard for Verona's civic museums.

Ponte Scaligero itself is a public pedestrian crossing, free and open at all hours, separate from the museum's own ticketed hours.
